Permanent residence by Karta Polaka
Permanent residence by Karta Polaka is one of the fastest ways to obtain permanent status in Poland. A holder of a valid Karta Polaka can file an application right after moving — with no residence-duration or income requirements, and no state fee. Karta Polaka confirms a connection to Polishness, but obtaining stały pobyt also requires confirming an intention to live permanently in Poland. We support the entire process — from checking documents to obtaining the decision and preparing for the further path to citizenship.
What do you need for permanent residence by Karta Polaka?
The law sets just two conditions — and neither is about money. All the preparation comes down to a valid card and a convincing intention to settle.
A valid Karta Polaka
The card must be valid at the time of filing (issued to adults for 10 years). We check the expiry date and, if needed, start the renewal before beginning the procedure.
Intention to settle in Poland
Zamiar osiedlenia się is confirmed by a combination of factors: work or study, housing (rental or owned), meldunek, PESEL, children's school. There's no formal minimum — the voivode assesses the overall picture.
Legal stay and filing through MOS
A visa, visa-free entry, or a valid residence permit — any legal status qualifies. From 27 April 2026, the application is filed only electronically through MOS with a profil zaufany signature.
Don't have a Karta Polaka yet? That's a separate procedure with a consul (for Belarusians — with the Podlaskie voivode) — we'll help you figure out where to start.
Karta Polaka or Polish roots — which route is yours?
Both paths lead to permanent residence through Polish origin, but the economics and risks differ noticeably. If you don't have the card yet, it's sometimes faster to go directly “by roots.”
| Permanent residence by Polish roots | Permanent residence by Karta Polaka | |
|---|---|---|
| Where origin is confirmed | At the voivode's office — as part of the permanent-residence procedure itself | In advance, with a consul (Belarusians — with the Podlaskie voivode) when obtaining the card |
| Interview about Polishness | At the office: language, traditions, connection to the nation | Already passed when obtaining the card — the voivode doesn't repeat it |
| State fee | 640 zł + 100 zł for the card | 0 zł + 100 zł for the card |
| Resettlement benefit | Not available | Available |
| Residence period before filing | Not required | Not required |
| Citizenship | After 1 year on permanent residence (uznanie, B1) | After 1 year on permanent residence (uznanie, B1) |
The main risk of the “by roots” route is unproven ancestor documents at the permanent-residence stage; with Karta Polaka, this risk is already cleared at the consular stage.
What permanent residence by Karta Polaka gives you
Indefinite status right away
Pobyt stały doesn't need to be renewed — an indefinite permit with a plastic card valid for 10 years (replacing the card is a formality).
Work and business without restrictions
Full access to the labor market without permits, and the right to run a JDG on equal terms with Polish citizens — with any form of taxation.
A resettlement benefit
Świadczenie pieniężne for up to 9 months: in 2026 — 2403 zł/mo for the applicant and spouse, 1201,50 zł for a child (the first 3 months; then 60% of those amounts). The application must be filed within 3 months of filing for permanent residence.
Family support
800+ child benefits and family programs on equal terms with citizens; for a spouse without the card, we build a parallel route through family reunification.
Citizenship after a year
After just 12 months on permanent residence, you can apply for uznanie za obywatela (recognition as a citizen) — the shortest legal path to a Polish passport. You'll need Polish at level B1.
Stability for good
The status doesn't depend on your employer, income, or renewals; it can only be revoked in exceptional cases explicitly named in the law.

Common refusal reasons — and how we address them
Refusals on this ground are almost always related not to origin (it's already confirmed) but to the card and the intention to settle.
Karta Polaka has expired by the time of filing
We check the expiry date before starting; if it's about to run out, we handle renewal with the consul first, then file for permanent residence.
Intention to settle isn't proven
If you actually live outside Poland and have no connection to the country, the case can be problematic. We don't take on such cases if you're not planning to move.
Contradictions with the facts
Border stamps and registers show life outside Poland. We check your travel history and plan an honest relocation before filing.
Missed the świadczenie deadline
3 months from filing for permanent residence is a hard deadline for the benefit application. We put it in the case calendar on the day of filing.
A missed request from the voivode
Correspondence is electronic — we keep a calendar and respond on time.
Errors in the data of residence-related documents in Poland
A mismatch in address, contract validity dates, or applicant details can trigger additional questions from the office. We check the documents before filing and help correct any inaccuracies.
A refusal can be appealed within 14 days via the voivode to the Urząd do Spraw Cudzoziemców. But on this route it's better simply not to reach the point of refusal — preparation is what decides it.
